Welcome to the Community Safety Toolkit, a guide for Autistic adults who want to learn about or work on skills related to staying safe while navigating their local community. Community safety is a crucial component of community living and therefore independent living. It is also a complex topic that requires some practice and know-how.

The aim of this toolkit is to go over many crucial facets of community safety and to begin building a framework where each individual reading can establish their own goals based on their current resources and community.

What Is Inside?

  • What is Community Safety?
  • Community Safety Goals
  • Getting Around
  • Asking for Help
  • Identifying Safe People
  • Interacting with Community Helpers
  • Interacting with Strangers
  • Safety Plans
  • Section for Caregivers

Who Is This For?

This toolkit is primarily intended for Autistic adults, with an additional focus for families, caregivers, and professionals. The toolkit operates from an approach that each individual has different safety needs and priorities, and that we can focus on the areas that are most relevant to our day-to-day lives.

We hope this toolkit will be helpful to anyone who has any outstanding needs and concerns related to their safety or the safety of someone they support when accessing resources in the community.

About the Lifespan Toolbox

The Lifespan Toolbox is a collection of toolkits for everyone in the autism community from self-advocates, family members, professionals, and other members of the community to get on the same page about autism and lifespan.

We span topics all over the lifespan, specifically thinking about the adulthood years (the longest span of our lives!) and how we can all work together to support the autistic person/people in our lives and community.

Research and reported experiences from autistic individuals show a need to receive individualized support regarding life skills and to be connected with others. That’s where the Lifespan Toolbox comes in!

Interactive

  • Each toolkit page has an interactive webpage with active links and videos. You can also download the PDF which has ample space for taking notes.
