Career exploration and job skill development can be taught across grade levels by general and special educators as well as in community-based settings. There are many topics, skill areas, practices, and activities outlined in research on career and technical education and special education (in our References page).

What's Inside:
  • Work Ready Scope & Sequencing Guide
  • Learning Outcomes by Unit
  • Unit-Level Descriptions of Lesson Ideas, Objectives, and Suggested Activities
We have also aligned this guide with transition planning services outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Career and Technical Education Career Ready Practices (CCTC), and American School Counselor Association Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success (ASCA).

In this guide, we have compiled 14 categories, or units, each with their own set of learning outcomes, suggested lessons and activities. These units can be taught in order or you can create a pathway based on your programming and students’ needs. Each category/unit includes objectives across beginning, growing, and advancing skill areas (can match grade setting).

The Categories/Units are:
  1. Getting Ready for Work
  2. Learning About Myself
  3. Building Work Skills
  4. Exploring Job Options
  5. Jobs in My Community
  6. My Work Goals
  7. How Work Gets Done
  8. Problem-Solving at Work
  9. Work Experiences
  10. Planning for My Future
  11. Looking for a Job
  12. Starting a Job
  13. Pay and Managing Money
  14. Procedures in the Workplace
Purpose of the Work Ready Curriculum Scope and Sequence Guide:
This guide is an instructional tool intended to be used by educators and service providers. The purpose of the Work Ready Curriculum Scope and Sequence Guide is to provide a recommended framework and sequence to deliver career exploration and vocational education.

The guide’s layout demonstrates how skills build on each other and can be delivered in a sequential manner. However, the sequential manner is not mandatory, and you can navigate the guide based on the needs of your students.

Using this guide will help to ensure that students are developing the skills and knowledge that are relevant and necessary to help them learn about careers and job skills across grades and support needs, as well as promote career and technical education.

The goals of this guide are to assist with:
  • Adding structure and consistency to career and vocational education delivery.
  • Using instructional scaffolding to build on existing knowledge to advance job skills and increase independence.
  • Using a person-driven planning approach to ensure instruction leads to individualized skill development.
  • Targeting instruction around a student’s current needs and supporting grade-level content access.
  • Collaborating with a student’s support system (i.e., students, teachers, caregivers, related service providers) to make decisions about vocational education that will increase student participation and engagement.
