Student interviews are an engaging activity for students to practice self-advocacy skills and prepare for their IEP meeting. Students can interview each other or you or staff can interview each student.

Objective: Students will share their preferences, interests, needs, and goals. Professionals can use this information to inform IEP writing and data collection.

While you can use this this resource in a variety of ways at school, some suggested uses are included below:

  • Teaching about self-advocacy, identifying preferences, and the IEP
  • Practicing routines for self-advocacy
  • Re-teaching and supporting indicating preferences, interests, needs, and goals
  • Annual routines (or monthly to quarterly) related to the IEP and progress monitoring
  • Student portfolio for their IEP
  • Send home to use with parents/caregivers
