This toolkit was designed for the benefit of teachers and school professionals who are seeking out ways to better serve their autistic students. As a special educator, you are often both the main advocate for your students’ needs and the main enforcer of rules and expectations imposed by your town, district, county, state, or country.

Meeting a particular student’s needs, especially needs that aren’t tied to well established practices, can require the participation of stakeholders across the school or district and it goes without saying that none of them are going to organize themselves!

In short, it’s a lot of work and a tricky balancing act all at once. And that’s just for the folks who are confident they’re doing everything right!

Navigating the maze of bureaucracy while trying to protect the interests of children who should already have the resources they need is already a lot, and doing so when you’re not sure where to navigate can be a daunting and scary process.

We hope this guide will serve as both compass and guardrail, helping avoid some of the most common pitfalls and offering a sense of where you may need to go based on your situation.

Who Is This For?

This toolkit is meant for teachers and school professionals, but parents, caregivers, and autistic self-advocates can certainly make a note of what it has to offer and pass it along to the teachers and school professionals in their lives.

In whatever role(s) you occupy, you can use this guide to support your knowledge on the topic, share information with others in your support networks, and use this guide in discussions about locating appropriate resources.

Each individual is in a different place and can benefit from learning about ideas and ways to support or seek support.

About the Lifespan Toolbox

The Lifespan Toolbox is a collection of toolkits for everyone in the autism community from self-advocates, family members, professionals, and other members of the community to get on the same page about autism and lifespan.

We span topics all over the lifespan, specifically thinking about the adulthood years (the longest span of our lives!) and how we can all work together to support the autistic person/people in our lives and community.

Research and reported experiences from autistic individuals show a need to receive individualized support regarding life skills and to be connected with others. That’s where the Lifespan Toolbox comes in!
