warm-up, morning meeting, transition activity, small group, 1:1, whole class, lessons around autism acceptance month, and broadly autism acceptance as well as neurodiversity

PROMOTING ACCEPTANCE
This resource combines preferences from the autistic community today – not only language, but also neurodiversity-affirming and strengths-based language. Which means, we do not discuss autism as a major problem, illness, or terrible disease. The goal for this lesson is for students to learn more about their own differences, how to frame others’ differences, and how to navigate differences around them. Research around autism attitudes shows that when you reframe autism with more understanding, autism acceptance increases.

*We use identity-first language in all of our resources due to autism community preferences – you can read more about our language policy here). And following suit, we break the myth around the puzzle piece and person-first language.
