Resources for Meaningful Work for Autistic Adults

adulthood community Jun 25, 2019

Autism adult resources are very limited, but are growing in number and availability each day.

This post will share some resources for you to get started in your search for meaningful work.

As mentioned, the resources for adults on the autism spectrum to find meaningful work are scarce.

You’ll find that the majority of these resources are provided through universities and related programming.

Let us know if you come across any that we missed!

Our goal is to have a comprehensive list of autistic employment resources.

FROM RESEARCHERS

Research with youth with disabilities suggests several predictors for successful employment outcomes, including work-based learning experiences.

NATIONAL TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CENTER ON TRANSITION (NTACT)

The National Technical Assistance Center on Transition is a great resource for research-based resources.

They’ve conducted many systematic reviews of interventions and resources supporting employment success and other adulthood outcomes for youth with disabilities.

Check out their website for information about their research, how they identify effective practices, and many free resources.

FOR THE WORKPLACE

JOB ACCOMMODATION NETWORK (JAN)

The Job Accommodation Network provides accommodation ideas for the workplace.

JAN, from West Virginia University and the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) is a source of free, expert, and confidential guidance and advice on workplace accommodations.

They work broadly through the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and help people with disabilities and work with employers.

The link shares some common accommodations that employees on the autism spectrum have asked for in the workplace.

HIRE AUTISM

Hire Autism is a job-matching program based out of Northern Virginia.

They also have a Resource Center to guide others on the spectrum in their job search.
